Dry wax vs. wet wax: What is the difference between the new Baracuta G9 - and which one suits you?
Excerpt (teaser): Two types of wax, one classic: the Baracuta G9 Harrington is now available as a wet wax and a dry wax. We explain the differences in look, weather protection & care - and why UNIT Hamburg is your first port of call for Baracuta.
Short version
-
Wet Wax: classic, slightly "oily" wax feel, maximum rain protection, strong patina.
-
Dry wax: dry, matt feel, very good water repellency, lighter & more urban look.
Wet wax - the classic wax jacket character
-
Material/Heritage: Waxed fabric from British Millerain (1880, "made for Sunshine & Rain")
-
Look & feel: subtle sheen, typical "waxy" touch, strong patina over time
-
Weather protection: very high - ideal for long rainy & stormy days
-
Wearing comfort: slightly more substantial, "hugs" the body; our G9 also has a fur lining
-
Care: wipe off dirt, wax regularly (we carry wax jacket care spray); dark clothing recommended underneath
Example from us:
Baracuta G9 Harrington "Wax (wet wax)", fur-lined - corduroy edge on the zipper, 2-way zipper, patch pockets, inside pocket. Introductory price 450 €.

Dry wax - lighter, more modern, suitable for the city
-
Material/Heritage: Halley Stevenson (since 1864, slogan "Home and Dry"), ecru outer fabric, checked lining
-
Look & feel: matt/dry, less "waxy" feel, clean city look
-
Weather protection: very good for everyday use; needs freshening up a little sooner than wet wax in continuous rain
-
Wearing comfort: usually lighter, more breathable; less risk of wax transfer
-
Care: brush off dry/wipe off damp, dry wax care as required (we advise & stock care spray)
Example from us:
Baracuta G9 Harrington "Dry Wax" (Ecru) - 2-way zip, front & inside pocket, checkered liner.

FAQ (short)
Can I wash wax jackets?
No. Do not wash. Brush off dirt dry or wipe off with a damp cloth, then refresh the wax/finish.
How often to refresh?
Depends on use & weather. Wet wax usually stains earlier/more frequently than dry wax.
Does wax stain?
Wet wax can transfer - especially with heat/pressure. Wear dark layers underneath; we can advise you.
